There are certain values that I hold that I believe make me an effective teacher. Because these values are a part of my character, I do not have to struggle to be someone or something I’m not.
I am respectful; not just of those in authority over me, but also of my coworkers and students. When I treat others with respect, I model to my students how I expect them to be respectful as well.
I am honest. By being truthful, I show others that I can be trusted. With honesty comes the responsibility to be tactful. Honesty without tact is another word for mean. I strive to always be honest with my students, my coworkers, and myself.
I am fair. My students soon learn that I have one set of rules for the entire class, and the established consequences of breaking the rules. Because I am fair, my students never have to wonder what to expect of me.
I believe communities are a vital part of our schools. By being actively involved in the community, I have established that I belong and am a part of that community. I believe it is important for my students to understand the community they belong to and how their actions impact not only themselves, but their community.
I am compassionate and I have a strong sense of integrity. I strive to do what’s right, even when no one is looking. Because of my compassion and integrity, my students will not have to worry that I am not looking out for their best interests. I am their advocate, when no one else has time. I am their defender when they are under attack.
